Spicy Steamed Plums

An interesting mix of flavours from the tropics and temperate regions suitable for Vegan, Paleo and Diabetic diets.

Plums are abundant at the end of summer. I think they are not prized enough and am endeavouring to provide ideas for utilising them in both sweet and savoury dishes. This healthy, simple recipe offers an interesting variation on stewed plum. It makes a tasty and novel fruit dish for breakfast; and I really enjoy them served with Buckwheat Waffles.

Diets for which Spicy Steamed Plums are suitable:

Dairy Free, Diabetic, Gluten Free, Low Calorie, Low Fat, Nut Free, Paleo, Vegetarian and Vegan.

Ingredients

Preparation: 5 mins | Cooking: 15 mins | Serves: 4+ cup

500 gm (16 oz) plums
2 star anise
125 ml (1/2 cup) water
2 tsp sugar or Stevia (optional)*

Method

HALVE the plums removing stone if you wish.
PLACE plums, and star anise in pan, pouring in water to a depth of approximately 2 cm (the plums steam in the water not boil).
HEAT gently at a low/medium temperature so the fruit retains its shape and some texture.
CHECK after 10 minutes and take off the heat when they are the texture you desire.
COOL and refrigerate.

Serve

– Decorate with slivered almonds if desired (not Nut Free)

Notes

* Sweetener as required. Less sweetener will be used if added in cooking rather than at the table.

Variation

– Stewed Plums – gently stew or bake halved plums in a little white wine (adding a little sugar or stevia if necessary). Add basil when you have removed the fruit from the heat.
