Chocolate-Banana Spread

A ‘healthy’ chocolate spread with numerous uses and for many diets including Dairy Free, Paleo, Raw and Vegan.

This is the most versatile of treats. All the ingredients are raw and can be ‘wizzed’ together for a delicious snack in minutes. With the sweet flavour from banana and dates, it is suitable for diabetic diets when eaten in small quantities.

The flavours of this spread can be adjusted with a variety of spices: try cinnamon or cardamom.

Diets for which Chocolate-Banana Spread is suitable:

Dairy Free, Diabetic, Gluten Free, Paleo, Raw, Vegan and Vegetarian.

Preparation: 15 mins (+soaking time for dates) | Serves: 1 cup

4 dates
1 banana, ripe
40 gm (1/4 cup) almonds
2 tbsp olive oil
40 gm (1/4 cup) cocoa or cacao powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp vanilla*

SOAK the dates in water for 10-30 minutes depending on how dry they are. (Their skins need to be soft to process to a smooth texture, although the dates should not be so soft that they fall apart.)
DRAIN all the water off the dates.
COMBINE the almonds and oil in a food processor and make a paste. (This is like peanut butter, ie make it smooth or crunchy to your preference.)
MASH the banana with a fork.
ADD the banana, dates, cocoa, salt and vanilla to the almond paste.
BLEND until it is the texture you prefer.
STORE in a jar and refrigerate.

– Delicious as a spread on bread or biscuits; as a ‘cream’ with fruit; or as the filling for pastry tarts (nut pastry as illustrated).
– Store for 2-3 days in a refrigerator.

* Try with cinnamon or cardamon.
